BRIAN SWANSON
Brian grew up in Rockford, Illinois in a family of mechanical engineers. A work career in construction and engineering made possible studies in art at Western Illinois University and graduate study in sculpture at Central Washington University. Work experiences, an engineering background and interest in industrial design have led to images with references to history and the evolving human condition overlaid with a contemporary sensibility.
Based in Seattle from 1980-1999, Brian became involved in public art, usually functional, while showing in galleries nationwide. His functional and sculptural work continues to evolve, often using vintage found objects.
In 1999 he left the city for the canyon country of southern Utah, building a solar powered home/studio near Capitol Reef National Park. With partners, he opened a seasonal contemporary art gallery in Torrey, Utah. Continuing work in sculpture is augmented with enjoying and preserving the natural and cultural environment of the area.
